The sign for CONVENT consists of two parts. (i) The first part is the sign for HOUSE. It is made with one hand in the shape of 5 bent at the knuckles such that it forms a right angle. The palm faces downwards. The hand is placed at the side of the head with the fingers pointing towards the head. (ii) The second part is the sign for PRIEST. This is made with one hand in the shape of small C. The hand moves from one side to the other of the neck as if indicating the shape of the priest’s collar.

The sign for NUN is made instead of PRIEST in reference to a nunnery. One hand takes the shape of 1, with palm facing outwards, and moves from the middle of the forehead along the face.

The second part of the sign for MONK is made after the sign for PRIEST in reference to a monastery. This is the sign for ROPE made with both hands in fist shape. The hands are placed over each other then open and move up or close and move down alternately, with the bottom hand moving to the top.
